This post is about optimizing morning routine and finding the most efficient way to make your mornings beautiful.
My research for the topic
The topic I was suggested was ‘how to optimize a morning routine’. I went through some articles on the internet and here are 3 things that I found.
1.) Internet is full of ‘tips’
Everyone seems to be suggesting ‘tasks’ that you should do for a good morning routine. For example here are some common ‘tips’ :
- Drink water
- Don’t open emails till noon
- Turn off your phone
- prepare the night before
- Visualize your goals for the day
- Do the hardest tasks first (eat the frog)
….. and endless tips you can find on the internet. Many of them are useful and work really well. However…
2.) They feel hollow
I found that reading all those tips was too overwhelming. It all felt like too much information without any real insight about the morning. So even though the tips are useful, they felt like ideas without any foundations. These foundations are the qualities which make the tasks meaningful. We will see them later in the article.
I mean it feels too dry to talk about the morning routine without really understanding what a morning is!
3.) Not all tips work for everyone.
All the articles I read present the tips as if they will work for everyone! Each one of us wake up at different times, at different place and under different circumstances. So we need to figure out what works best for us.
So what do I want to offer you?
My blog is about reaching the depth of any topic and asking the fundamental questions. My blog is about developing insights which need to work with the ‘practical tasks’.
I don’t want you to go through your mornings mechanically, completing task after task. I want you must understand the essence of a morning, and then live it in a way that works best for you!
What is a morning?
Morning is a change in consciousness. Waking up is not an ordinary phenomenon. It is a great event. It is like being born again. That means every morning is a new opportunity to live, to do something you always wanted to do!
What do you want out of your morning?
This is the most important question to ask before setting up any morning routine. This is where your uniqueness plays the most important role. Morning sets a mood for the entire day. What you do in first 2-3 hours of the morning is really important for the entire day. So it is really important to define what exact rhythm you want to set up for your mornings.
Answering this question, I come to four important qualities that I want my mornings to have. As I said earlier, these are the foundations. Once you understand your foundations, you can choose or create ‘tasks’ which help you achieve those qualities.
Being born again is something to be grateful for. As soon as I wake up, I want my mind to be filled with gratefulness. I want to be deeply grateful for each and everything that I can think of:
- I am grateful for being alive
- I am grateful for having air, water, food, healthy mind and body, home, wealth and wonderful relationships
- I am grateful for having the opportunity to help others and create wonderful things….
what exercises you can set for yourself to be grateful?
It works differently with everyone. Some people can keep gratefulness journal, while others can just join their hands and pray! But the important point is to feel deeply grateful!
2.) Aliveness, awareness
After being grateful, I want to be as alive and aware as I can be. I want to feel and live. I want my senses, perceptions and alertness to be at its best.
What exercises can you set up to be more alive and aware?
Physical exercise, mindfulness and meditation are a few ‘tasks’ you can do to achieve this quality. You can come up with your own exercises that make you feel more full of life!
3.) Joy and Enthusiasm
After being grateful and alive, I want to be full of joy and excitement. What can I do to bring more joy and excitement?
- When I visualize achieving my goals, I am filled with joy and excitement
- When I observe nature, I feel joy
- When I do physical exercise, I feel joy and excitement because of the release of endorphins.
- When I meditate, I feel joy
What brings joy and excitement in your life? Set up the tasks keeping in mind these qualities.
After feeling gratefulness, alertness, joy and enthusiasm I am ready to do something which can satisfy me. I am now ready to take actions. Here are a few things that satisfy me:
- Completing the most difficult task with great focus and concentration
- Hard work done for something that is meaningful to me
- Completing a challenge or a project that I set up for myself
What makes you satisfied? Find out the answer to that questions and set up the tasks that can help you do that.
These were the qualities that I want my mornings to have. You should try and have your own answers and then decide on the activities that will help you achieve that. Remember the question:
What do you want from your mornings?
Find out those qualities. Focus on those values. They will lead you to your desired routine. Because again, no routine is perfect for everyone. You have to find your own routine with the qualities that you desire. Here are some questions to help you:
- Which was the best morning of my life?
- What were the elements and qualities of that morning?
- How can I bring those qualities in my every morning?
- What activities I can set up to fulfil the qualities that I want my mornings to have?
- Do I really need a routine? What if I can achieve beautiful mornings without emphasizing a routine?
Thank you for reading. I hope my insights were helpful.
